Medical waste: More than 6,500 tons produced by the health sector

This quantity is divided between 3,500 tons in public hospitals, 800 tons in primary health care facilities and 2,000 tons at the level of health facilities in the private sector, said the Minister in response to an oral question in the House of Representatives.

The Ministry has taken a series of measures for the management and treatment of this medical waste in a safe manner, he noted, noting that 21 devices for grinding and treatment of such waste have been acquired since 2002, while the University Hospitals of Marrakech and Fez have been equipped with 3 devices for waste treatment.

In addition, other measures have been taken in parallel, namely the publication of ministerial circulars on the subject and two scientific guides on the management of medical waste, in addition to the adoption of the mode of delegated management for these wastes, noted Ait Taleb. Thus, since the enactment of Law No. 28-00 on waste management and disposal, the Ministry allocates funds to public hospitals for this purpose, he continued, adding that the proper management of medical waste is, since 2007, among the standards of quality and hospital accreditation.

In addition, the framework of reference for the environmental audit of hospitals for the management of medical and pharmaceutical waste was established in 2013, the Minister recalled, also mentioning the inclusion of funds dedicated to the delegated management of medical waste in the budgets of health delegations and public health institutions, as well as the organization of training sessions to ensure the treatment and disposal of medical waste safely, in accordance with the law.
