At least 39,930 applications were submitted in 2021, an increase of 170%. Last year’s figures remain the highest since 2016, the media reports, noting that more than 42,000 applications were received.
The main country of origin was Syria, with around 16,300 applications, relatively ahead of Afghanistan with over 8,700. Third place went to Morocco with more than 1,900, the same source identified, noting that there were only 91 citizens from Ukraine.
Syrians have the best chance of having their applications approved, with a 78% chance, compared to 26% for Afghans and only 0.2% for Moroccans. In fact, about 12,000 positive decisions were made last year, compared to about 13,600 rejections, Der Standard concluded.
