Wheat imported from Ukraine: no shortage in Morocco

The global geopolitical situation is causing panic on the world markets. Grain prices reached record highs on the European market on Thursday, with wheat reaching a record high of 344 euros a tonne on Euronext, analysts and brokers told AFP.

The Moroccan government spokesman said that “the conflict between Ukraine and Russia will have an impact on price levels, especially for oil and wheat”. He stressed, however, that “there will be no problem or effect on the supply of the Moroccan market”.

Baitas affirmed that the Moroccan authorities made efforts last January in this sense, which “were successful in terms of soft wheat imports, as this material was subsidised to the tune of nearly 60 billion dirhams, and the national soft wheat stock was strengthened,” adding that there was nothing to fear on this side.

Moreover, the Moroccan official affirmed that it will be “the government (that) will bear the responsibility for the rise in prices of certain foodstuffs”, considering that the Finance Law will not have to be amended because it has provided room for manoeuvre. Baitas also announced that the Moroccan diplomatic services in Ukraine received, this Thursday morning, 7,095 telephone calls from Moroccans living in Ukraine following the Russian military intervention.

In this regard, he said that “the Kingdom’s embassy had previously issued a recommendation for all students to leave Ukraine and had assigned telephone numbers for receiving requests and questions from Moroccans residing in this country.
