The Portugal-Morocco electricity interconnection is “fundamental” for the Portuguese

The Portuguese Prime Minister, Antonio Costa, described the electricity interconnection between his country and Morocco as “fundamental”, stressing that the Kingdom could be an alternative for supplying Europe. “The interconnection with Morocco is fundamental. If we can produce renewable energy from solar sources at a lower cost, Morocco, for many reasons, will be able to do it,” Costa said during a debate in the Portuguese Parliament, as reported by the news portal “expresso.pt“.

“Morocco will be able to supply Europe in a consistent manner,” the Portuguese Prime Minister pointed out, adding that “this is a new cooperation niche with Africa that we can and must develop in order to have energy security.

According to Costa, his country “could be a gateway for clean energy or clean transitional energy from third countries”.

He said Europe must diversify its energy sources and can no longer depend on Russia, Turkey or Algeria.
